The Charlotte Mason Education Association (CMEA) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing, preserving, and practicing timeless Charlotte Mason education in both homeschools and private schools.
OUR MISSION: We exist to recognize, strengthen, and safeguard authentic Charlotte Mason education across homeschools and private schools through thoughtful accreditation, mentorship, and shared standards. We serve families and small schools desiring clarity without conformity, accountability without bureaucracy, and accreditation that honors Charlotte Mason’s philosophy rather than replacing it.
STATEMENT OF RELIGIOUS VIEWS: CMEA’s standards focus on CM educational philosophy. With that said, Charlotte Mason was a devout Christian and believed that Christ is the ultimate Teacher and that all truth belongs to Him. She rejected the division between “sacred” and “secular” learning, insisting that every subject—science, literature, art, mathematics, and nature study—falls under the lordship of Christ. Knowledge, in her view, was not simply information to be mastered but a means by which children encounter reality as God made it. While it is difficult to separate Mason's core Christian beliefs from her philosophy of education in practice, individual families and schools may express their convictions within their own contexts, provided the educational practices align with Charlotte Mason’s original principles.
OUR VISION: We desire to see Charlotte Mason education practiced with clarity, integrity, and confidence across diverse settings, strengthened by philosophical insight, accountability and mutual encouragement, so that future generations may inherit an education that is humane, generous, and dedicated to its original vision. We affirm that CM education is not a method to be copied mechanically, but a living philosophy—one that requires understanding, compassion, and thoughtful application in diverse contexts.
We envision a growing network of parent-led homeschools, tutorials, and co-ops, and facilitator-led microschools and small private schools that are:
